About this Event

Explore Colchester Castle in a new way on 13 February with our new Live-Captioned Talk + Tour, created especially for Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing visitors.

Accompanied by live captions and images throughout, you’ll begin with an engaging introduction to the Castle’s remarkable 2,000-year history. After a question-and-answer session with our guide, you’ll explore some of the Castle’s hidden spaces, including the Roman Vaults and the Great Stairs.

As Wi-Fi is not available underground, we have provided accessible alternatives, including interpretive signage and a pre-recorded captioned video, ensuring you don’t miss any of the stories along the way.

The tour concludes in the Castle’s first-floor galleries, where you can continue exploring the collections and displays at your own pace.

The Talk + Tour begins promptly at 3.00pm and finishes at approximately 4.15pm. Please take your seat at least five minutes before the start time. We also recommend arriving earlier to enjoy the Castle and galleries before the event begins.

Suitable for ages 8+, although the experience is primarily designed for adult visitors.

This tour includes uneven stairs, low archways that require crouching, and areas of uneven flooring. Unfortunately, there is no lift access to some parts of the route.

Visitors who would prefer an alternative experience can enjoy a captioned virtual guided tour, available to hire for £1.50 from reception. A tablet with the tour preloaded and headphones will be provided.

For information about access, facilities and finding us, please visit our Access at the Castle page.
