About this Event
5.30 – 6.30pm (doors open from 5pm)
Essex has the dubious honour of being the English county most associated with the witch-persecution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Is this distinction justified? How ‘bad’ were the Essex witch-trials, compared with other English counties? And how does Essex compare in the broader European context? Join us for an evening with Professor Alison Rowlands from The University of Essex, who will provide a comparative perspective on this aspect of our regional history.
The Castle will be open from 5 – 7pm, so you have time to explore Wicked Spirits?, browse the magical merchandise on sale in the shop and even grab a drink.
This event is suitable for ages 12+. Please note it will explore real historical events, including death and torture, which some people may find upsetting.
