About this Event

As part of your visit to Colchester Castle, join arts practitioner Clare Sams on Saturday 7 November, any time between 10.30am and 12.30pm, for a creative drop-in workshop inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.

Line and Linen: Norman-Style Illustration on Fabric explores the bold lines, figures and storytelling found in Norman art. Taking inspiration from the scenes of the Bayeux Tapestry, participants will create their own Norman-inspired design directly onto fabric, using a range of drawing materials and creative techniques to develop their illustration.

Participants will be encouraged to explore the distinctive style of Norman imagery, including decorative patterns, figures and narrative scenes, before creating their own unique design on fabric to take home. The activity focuses on drawing and illustration rather than sewing or embroidery, making it suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.

Norman-themed colouring sheets will also be available for younger children.

Suitable for all ages, visitors are welcome to drop in at any point during the session and spend as much time as they wish developing their design.

Information on facilities, accessibility and how to find us can be found on our Colchester Castle Access page.

How to Book

There’s no need to book in advance. After purchasing a day ticket, or with a valid annual pass, simply ask at Reception when you arrive and we’ll point you in the right direction.

The workshop has limited capacity, and at busy times there may be a short wait before you can take part.
