About this Event
5.30 – 6.35pm
When the Essex witch trials are discussed, the name of Matthew Hopkins – the self styled Witchfinder General is usually mentioned.
In 2007 John Worland and Kerry King from the Headgate theatre decided to create a more accurate record of the infamous trial of 1645 and give more prominence to the victims rather than to the villains. A large scale community project involving over 160 people resulted in the film “Witchfinder.” This shows how the horrendous persecution started and spread, based on superstition, hysteria and lies.
The Castle will be open from 5 – 7pm, so you have time to explore Wicked Spirits?, browse the magical merchandise on sale in the shop and even grab a drink.
This film is suitable for ages 12+. Please note it will explore real historical events, including death and torture, which some people may find upsetting.
