Give It A Grow

Colchester, nature needs you!

Across the city, residents are helping wildlife find food, shelter and safe passage, so nature can thrive right where we live. Whether you have a window box, a doorstep or a garden, you can be a good neighbour to nature.

Nature is closer than you think

Not sure where to start?

Colchester has a rich natural history, from the Roman River valley to the gardens, parks and green corridors threaded through the city. But across the UK, wildlife populations have fallen by almost a third since 1970. The good news? Small actions at home really do add up.

From a pot of pollinator-friendly plants on your doorstep to a patch of wildflowers in your garden, every little space counts. You don’t need experience or lots of time. We’ve got tips for all kinds of spaces, and for all kinds of wildlife.

Take our quick quiz to find simple, personalised tips suited to your space, and the wildlife you love.

About the Campaign

Give it a Grow is a collaboration between Colchester’s Natural History Museum and Hubbub, an environmental charity with a decade of experience inspiring behaviour change in communities across the UK.

Colchester’s Natural History Museum holds powerful stories about local biodiversity, past and present. Together, we want to use those stories to help people connect with nature on their doorstep, and take simple actions that make a real difference.

This campaign is part of a wider effort to engage Colchester communities, including young people and those who might not typically visit a museum, in caring for local wildlife.

Wild About Essex

Give it a Grow is a pilot programme for Wild About Essex: The redevelopment of Colchester’s Natural History Museum.

Colchester’s Natural History Museum is set to undergo a major redevelopment. Thanks to the support of National Lottery players and Colchester City Council, we have an incredible opportunity to make the Museum a more relevant, exciting, and welcoming place to visit and to restore the grade II-listed medieval church building and surrounding outdoor space. This project is made possible with the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
