Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain and site of Boudica’s rebellion. Explore history where it happened.

Pupils will take on the role of archaeologists and learn about the events that led to up to Boudica’s revolt. They will discover the impact this had on people’s lives as Colchester changed from an Iron Age settlement to a prosperous Roman town.

Romans visit – story tour* + hands-on archaeology + galleries

  • Journey back 2000 years as you descend into the Roman vaults under the Castle.
  • This dramatic, interactive story tour will explore the Roman invasion and Boudica’s revolt.
  • Work as a team to reconstruct a large model Roman villa and Iron Age roundhouse.
  • Handle real Roman pottery and investigate its uses.
  • Develop skills of an archaeologist, investigating and interpreting evidence.
  • Full instructions and a free pre-visit are available to support your session.

General visit – Exploring the Galleries

  • Exciting new displays, interactive exhibits and gallery trails help your pupils explore the museum.
  • Interactive displays include Iron Age and Roman villa areas with costume and handling objects
  • Roman games displays including an interactive chariot ride
  • NEW – Until Friday 12th January you will also be able to download the ‘Gladiators School Trail’. An alternative trail around the galleries focused on the new exhibition at Colchester Castle, ‘Gladiators: A Day at the Roman Games’. 

*Lift access in the Castle is limited to the galleries. An alternative story tour is available for children who are unable to access the vaults.

Things to note

All school, nursery and group visits must be booked in advance.

Our team can reserve a date for you at time of booking, but please note the visit will not be confirmed until you receive a booking form.

If you need to cancel your booking, please do so at least 14 working days prior to your visit. Charges will be incurred if you do not give the required notice.

We are now invoicing all school groups for their visits. Invoices will follow approximately 20 working days from the date of your trip. The number of children indicated on the booking form is an approximate. You will only be charged for the number of children who actually visit on the day.

A minimum charge may apply.
